FIFA World Cup 2018: Which team has qualified and who have not

FIFA World Cup 2018: Which team has qualified and who have not

The round 2 of the World Cup is over and the tournament is all set to enter into the knockout phase, with just one round of matches left. Some of the teams have already qualified for the round of 16, while others have been knocked out and are all set to go back home. However, there are still some teams alive in the competition still and fighting hard to secure a place in the next round. With more wins and losses and some upset as well, here is an analysis of the results so far-

The host nation has gone through along with Uruguay, whom they will face off in the final game of the group. Both teams have 6 points and the last game will be the decider, as to who tops it. On the other hand, Egypt and Saudi Arabia will play for pride, as both sides look to secure their first points of the competition.

In this group, Spain are the current leaders based on goal difference, though both they and Portugal have 4 points each. Iran has 3 points at present, while Morocco is going home. With that being said, the Portuguese will face off against Iran and a draw or a win is what they need to go through, if Spain beats or draws with Morocco. On the other hand, if Iran wins, they go through, along with Spain and Portugal go home, unless Spain loses to Morocco by a huge margin and throws everything away.Peru are going home at present and France are through to the next round with 6 points.

Australia, with one point at present, have a chance to go through and if they beat Peru by scoring quite a few and not conceding in their upcoming match and Denmark (on 4) loses to France, by a huge margin. The alternative would be, if Denmark can secure a draw or win against France, both teams will go through, though the result of the game will decide, which team tops and which comes second.Croatia are through to the next round with 6 points. On the other hand, Nigeria have 4 at present, with Iceland and Argentina at 1 point each.

Argentina faces Nigeria less and has to win with a huge margin and hope that Iceland can’t get the job done against their European rivals. On the other hand, if Argentina loses, Nigeria go through and Iceland go home. Also, if the game between Argentina and Nigeria is a draw, the Africans might still push through, unless Iceland can pull off an absolute miracle and beat the leaders by a huge margin.Costa Rica are going home, though they can make or break the campaign for one of the other teams. Brazil and Switzerland are on 4 points each, while Serbia is on 3.

The Brazilians face off against the Serbians and the winner will go through, along with Switzerland if they win or draw their match. If Serbia beat Brazil and Switzerland lose too, then the team with the better goal difference with join Serbia in the next round. If Serbia beats Brazil and Switzerland beats Costa Rica, both winners will qualify for the knockout stages.

If Brazil wins, they go through as group toppers along with Switzerland, irrespective of the result in the other match.Mexico are still not through to the next round, despite two wins in two and it will be interesting to see which teams go through to the next round, though South Korea are going home.

If Germany beats Korea and Sweden beats Mexico, the two teams with the best goal difference will go through to the next round, as all teams will be on 6 points each then. On the other hand, if Mexico beats Sweden, they top the group and the Germans should go through to the next round along with them, if they secure a win or a draw. A draw between Mexico and Sweden and Germany avoiding a loss will see the Mexicans and Germans through still.

The last case is that Germany really lose badly to Korea and Sweden lose too, but by a tame margin, would mean that Mexico and Sweden would go through.

England and Belgium are through to the next round with 6 points each and the other two teams are going home, irrespective of the last day fixtures.

The only meaning to those matches would be to see, which team tops the group now (England vs Belgium) and Tunisia and Peru will be playing for pride and to secure their first points of the tournament.Poland are out of the World Cup, while the other teams are still in it. Japan and Senegal are having 4 points each, with the Colombians on 3.

The South Americans play Senegal next and the winner of that should join Japan in the next round, if the Japanese can draw or beat Poland. However, if Japan loses and Colombia beats Senegal, the team with the better goal difference out of Japan and Senegal will join Jose Pekerman’s team in the round of 16. If Colombia loses, Senegal and Japan are through, irrespective of the result of the other match.
