The left-wing activist said Angela Merkel “bears chief responsibility” for “ruining” people’s living standards with mass unemployment and “decimated public services”.

Mr Jones said the EU did not have to be propped up by Germany and called for the “radical reform” of 27-member bloc.

In a scathing rant on Twitter, the said: “Angela Merkel’s government bears chief responsibility for plunging Europe into catastrophic austerity which has ruined living standards, caused mass unemployment, decimated public services, and fuelled the far right.
“Her government isn’t woke, it’s a catastrophe for Europe.

“It's possible to support the European Union without supporting a) the German government or b) the disastrous rules governing the eurozone which have caused economic and social ruin.

“The EU's survival depends on radical reform: opposing reform is the biggest danger facing the EU.”
Confused Twitter users responded to Mr Jones’ attack, reminding him that he’s a Remainer.

One said: “Tory austerity has nothing to do with Merkel or the EU. Why are you mixing the 2 things?
Angela Merkel has been attack for causing a EU catastrophe

“Also, why is it that you are always silent on Brexit, but the first time you say anything on EU it's parroting UKIP lines????”

Another simply said: "Owen mate you've lost the plot."

He was even accused of becoming a “brexit apologist” and some followers thought his account had been hacked after the tirade.

His rant may have been fuelled by the G7, where Mrs Merkel made a power stance as she lent in to world leaders in a photograph that has gone viral.

Mr Jones' hit back at his confused social media audience, saying his outrage was at aimed at Mrs Merkel’s push for austerity in eurozone countries which have been bailed out – largely by Germany.

In one of a series of tweets he wrote: “Are you seriously arguing that I should not criticise the fact that the German government has objectively promoted austerity in the eurozone because that fact is cynically appropriated by the far right?

“Should I not have opposed the Iraq war because the BNP opposed it too?”
