The 46-year-old Spaniard was chosen as the man to succeed Arsene Wenger at the Emirates.

After nearly 22 years in charge, the Frenchman’s reign was brought to a close at the end of last season.

Emery has shown he can succeed, having impressed at Sevilla and just left Ligue 1 champions PSG.

Even under Jose Mourinho, United have not yet returned to the top in the Premier League.

And on his hopes for Emery at Arsenal, Upson exclusively told Starsport: “I think only time will tell on that front.

“Whoever took the job after Arsene Wenger is in for a very difficult challenge and that’s been proven with the Manchester United situation.

“He’s somebody that’s got the capabilities and the credentials and experience to come in and have an impact on Arsenal.”

Discussing his expectations for Arsenal moving forward, Upson added: “I think it’s one of those where it’s a season where they implement his philosophy.

“I think he has to stabilise the team and start pushing them in the direction of where you want the club to go, almost like a development season, seeing improvements but not expecting the finished article straight away.”

Arsenal have already taken their first steps in life after Wenger in the transfer market.

Stephan Lichsteiner became the club’s first signing since Wenger’s departure, arriving on a free from Juventus and bringing with him a wealth of experience.
