Jose Mourinho was prepared to pay £100 million for a new defender yesterday

Manchester United had one of the most disappointing deadline days yesterday. Despite their wealth and the outspoken desire of Jose Mourinho to get a new centreback, the Red Devils ended the day with no new defender coming through the door.

Yerry Mina, Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire, and Jerome Boateng were all targeted by the Portuguese boss, but he ended up not landing any of them as the club failed in one way or the other.
Sun Sport reports that the Portuguese boss was so desperate to get a defender yesterday that he could have easily paid £100 million for the signature of Rafael Varane or a defender with the same qualities.

The Red Devils have already spent £700 million since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, but they were not convinced by the players Mourinho wanted them to sign and believe they were of similar quality to the stars they already have.

Yerry Mina was close to signing, but the club baulked at paying his hefty agent fees, while the injury record of Jerome Boateng counted against him as he was demanding a huge salary to join the Red Devils.

Mourinho has now been left to find his best defensive pairing among the options that he has at his disposal.
