Jose Mourinho defends Spurs’ transfer window

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho believes Tottenham Hotspur had the most successful window of all the top sides, despite the north Londoners becoming the first Premier League club in history not to make a single summer signing.

In addition, nine of Mauricio Pochettino’s players reached at least the semi-final stage of the World Cup, including five England players.

Despite the potential for Spurs to burn out during the closing months of the campaign, Mourinho, whose side faces Pochettino’s next Monday, feels the club’s decision to tie down their prize assets was a strength in itself.

“Liverpool are trying to win the title with their amazing investment. Chelsea have a fantastic squad, Manchester City have a fantastic squad too. Tottenham made an incredible investment by keeping their players. That’s the best investment you can make,” he explained, as reported by Goal.

“They could be spending £200m but if they lose Harry Kane or Christian Eriksen… the biggest investment was keeping all their best players. Arsenal will be better even though they lost their first match. I think it’s going to be a very hard season.”

Arsenal have since lost again, going down 3-2 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge the weekend.
Tottenham overtook Liverpool late last season to finish an impressive third and will feel confident they can match that position in this campaign following victories against Newcastle United and Fulham in their opening two fixtures.

The Red Devils, meanwhile, have not attracted the marquee signings that the Old Trafford faithful might have been hoping for and a perceived weakness at centre-back was laid bare against Brighton & Hove Albion, with the Seagulls scoring three before half-time.
