Manchester United upstart Paul Pogba should do his talking on the pitch like Paul Scholes – then he might have a chance of emulating the midfield legend

UNITED legend Paul Scholes said that Paul Pogba “lacked leadership” following United’s 3-2 defeat to Brighton las weekend – and he was absolutely right.

This forced Pogba’s agent, Mino Raiola, to come out and criticise Scholes and state via a Tweet that, “some people need to talk for fear of being forgotten,” and that “Scholes should become sports director and advise [Ed] Woodward to sell Pogba.”

After a poor pre-season and a shaky start to the Premier League campaign, the situation at United is delicate at best.

I wrote in this very column last week that if it came to a choice for the United board between Paul Pogba and Jose Mourinho, then the Frenchman would likely win. Having weighed up Pogba’s recent comments and performances it might be best if both considered their future.

Pogba needs to take control of the situation himself and say something. Today!
Since he was given the captaincy against Leicester City, he’s published a cryptic tweet, announced he’s worried about saying certain things in fear of being fined, put in an abysmal display against Brighton, questioned his own attitude during the game, and then sat back and watched as his agent has criticised a club legend and attempted to force through a move.

Pogba’s silence is deafening and only increases pressure on the club and his team-mates in what is already proving to be a critical period.

It’s quite simple; stay silent and contribute to the mess, or come out and announce your commitment to the club.

Scholes was consistently world class and improved as time went on. He adapted his style to the changing demands of the game whilst maintaining his ridiculously high level of performance. Even in his final few months as a Manchester United player he was still capable of dictating games.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion of course, but Raiola is far from stupid, and his comments come while the transfer window is still open in the other major European leagues.

If his client really does want a move, then the best way to secure one is to get the old footage of Scholes out and show Pogba what world class consistency over a decade looks like.

As it stands, it looks like they’ve recognised the turbulent goings on at the club and are intent on making things worse.

I’m sure it’s not the first time one of Raiola’s clients have been questioned by pundits, it’s their job.

During his playing days though, Scholes may not have been vocal, but his football did the talking on the pitch and he oozed class, something Pogba and Raiola lack.
