Jose Mourinho decides on Man United team leader

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has finally confirmed the Captain list for Manchester United this season. The retirement of Micheal Carrick last season meant that United had to name a new first team captain.

Antonio Valencia captained the club most times last season and Mourinho has named the Ecuador international as the new captain of the side, the 33 year old signed from Wigan in 2009 and has gone on to establish himself as a mainstay in the United squad.
Valencia has reinvented himself as a right back under Mour
inho despite starting as a right winger during the days of Ferguson and has made 235 appearances for the Red Devils.

Paul Pogba captained the side in the opener against Leicester and would continue to deputise for Antonio Valencia until he returns back from injury. Pogba marked the captaincy with a big performance scoring the opener and performing excellently in the midfield.
Mourinho believes that Pogba personality and background as a United Academy product makes him a captain material for the future.  While Valencia would be the captain to ensure continuity of leadership.

United continue their Premier League campaign against Brighton at the Ames stadium and will be the favouritesdespite losing 2-1 last season.

‘We thought, I think it was before the game against Basel, Pogba is a young guy, with a good personality, made in the academy, normally a starting line-up player, so he has the conditions to be a captain in the future.

‘In the continuity of this, with no Antonio (Valencia) in the team, he was the captain and for the next match I don’t think Antonio’s going to play, so he’ll be the captain again. ‘But one day when Antonio comes back, Antonio will be the captain again.
