Jens Lehmann has described new Liverpool FC midfielder Naby Keïta as ‘sensitive’, adding that this leads the summer signing to struggle with inconsistency.
By all accounts, Keita’s performances in pre-season and the season opener against West Ham have been polished and accomplished.
However, former Arsenal goalkeeper Lehmann noted Keita’s time in Germany was marked by occasional poor performances.
Lehmann told Sky Sports’ The Debate: “Keita is a good player. He is very sensitive.
“He didn’t show up sometimes because he is sensitive.”
It remains to be seen whether the same issue will afflict Keita as a Liverpool FC player but the rigours of playing in England tends to put relentless pressure on players.
Plenty of players come to England with a big reputation and fail to deliver, mainly due to a packed schedule of games and worldwide scrutiny of performances.
Better, more experienced than players than Keïta have come to England and failed, however, his showings so far suggest he is relishing his time on Merseyside.
Keita’s athletic ability will complement Liverpool’s style of play and his ability to influence play will create yet more opportunities for Jurgen Klopp’s admired front three.
However, if the pressure and schedule get on top of him, Lehmann’s assessment could bear fruit in the coming months.
