MOUR LIKE CITY Jose Mourinho warned by Manchester United chiefs that transfer policy must change to become ‘more like Man City’

JOSE MOURINHO has been instructed by Manchester United bosses that the club's transfer policy must change and become more like Manchester City's, it is reported.

Chiefs at Old Trafford are thought to have told Mourinho he needs to target younger players rather than expensive, experienced options.

Mourinho endured a difficult transfer window, failing to land a number of targets including Harry Maguire and Jerome Boateng.

And it is understood the Portuguese manager was left frustrated by executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward after making just three signings this summer: Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant.

According to the Mirror, the United board want Mourinho to utilise the young talent at his disposal and Woodward did not even consider selling Paul Pogba or Anthony Martial this summer despite public disputes with the manager, citing that the Frenchmen are key to the club's future.

United are understood to have had enough of signings with small resale values, such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Alexis Sanchez and Nemanja Matic during Mourinho's tenure.

The model of Manchester City, though, is far more appealing for the bosses at Manchester United.
City signed 21-year-old Philippe Sandler, 19-year-old Daniel Arzani and 27-year-old Riyad Mahrez this summer as Pep Guardiola looks to continue last season's fine form.

Last season, all of City's major signings had resale potential with Aymeric Laporte, Benjamin Mendy, Bernado Silva and Ederson all aged 23 and under when brought into the Etihad.

United kick-off the new season tonight at home to Leicester, with Harry Maguire potentially starting against the club that tried to sign him this week.
