defender reveals Man United did make move for him in summer

Leicester City defender Harry Maguire has admitted he spoke to the club’s management about interest from Manchester United.

Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho was keen on landing the defender following his fine World Cup campaign with his country and the Red Devils were prepared to spend as much as £65 million on the one-time Hull City centre-back.

Manchester United ended the window without landing a centre-back after Ed Woodward vetoed Jose’s choices in the dying days of the window.

Harry became the Red Devils’ first choice once it was apparent Tottenham Hotspur would not budge on their £75 million valuation of Toby Alderweireld and the England player has revealed how close the deal was.

I spoke with Leicester after a bit of interest from clubs, and they reiterated that I wasn’t for sale and I respected that decision,’ said Maguire.

‘They gave me an opportunity to play in the Premier League when I had just been relegated with Hull. They gave me that opportunity and it is a club I am really enjoying my time at. I am playing week in and week out which is important to me.’
