While West Ham were inspired at the London Stadium, Mourinho's shambolic side served up the sort of display that pushes managers towards the sack.
Another half-hearted display from Pogba for Mourinho was perhaps no surprise after his manager had told him he would never captain Manchester United again and then further humiliated him in a training ground clash in front of the TV cameras.
But given the chance to show they were still fighting for Mourinho, after a week from hell that also included dropped league points against Wolves and an embarrassing, home Carabao Cup defeat to Derby, the rest of his players let their displays do the talking.
United weren't helped by a tactical experiment that didn't work. Midfielder Scott McTominay was deployed in a defence that was supposed to be a back three but at times was even a six.
He wasn't United's worst performer but certainly didn't justify the gamble.
And with Alexis Sanchez axed altogether having been previously undroppable, another recent regular Jesse Lingard also missing and Anthony Martial chucked in for a first league start for six weeks in a front two it felt like one of those final throws of the dice a manager makes when they are starting to run out of ideas.
It was all a bit of a mess which West Ham took full advantage of.
The game was just six minutes old when the decision to field McTominay in defence was in the spotlight.
Mark Noble played Pablo Zabaleta in down the right. The veteran full back looked inches offside but according to the assistant referee was being played onside by McTominay and Zabaleta crossed for Felipe Anderson to brilliantly back heel West Ham into the lead.
For 20 minutes or so West Ham United were everything Manchester United sides used to be.
They played with the intensity, fluidity, invention, expression and even though the visitors often had ten players behind the ball the Hammers passed around them like they were training cones.
Lindelof was the first United fall guy and replaced by Marcus Rashford. It was a damning indictment of the £31m Swede hat Mourinho preferred to leave McTominay on instead of him when he switched to a centre-back pairing.
Then Pogba and Martial were dragged off too and immediately United made it 2-1 when Rashford turned in Luke Shaw's corner.
But the visitors hopes of a comeback were extinguished three minutes later.
Noble fed the ball through a gaping hole between Chris Smalling and McTominay and Arnautovic had all the time to score.
West Ham rubbed it in by celebrating in the away technical area while a shellshocked Mourinho stared out in disbelief at the horror show he had witnessed in front of him.
It was impossible not to wonder how much longer he will have to.
