And so far this season he has looked on fire, playing the full 90 minutes in United's four games and even netting his first professional goal during their win over Leicester.
But the former Southampton ace has not always fitted into life at Old Trafford.
He struggled to get game time under Jose Mourinho last season as rumours surfaced that the Portuguese manager had fallen out with his left-back.
"I think at times he got frustrated with me because he knew I could do better," Shaw admitted.
“When I look back, maybe he was right.
"It was a tough few years but it made me stronger mentally. I wanted to prove to him I can do what he said I couldn't.
"I had a chat with the manager before the season and he said he wanted me to stay."
And the youngster revealed Jose Mourinho's comments helped push him on.
He added: "I've matured. You could say I've gone from a kid to a man. I know what I need to do to push myself.
“I want to play for Manchester United, stay there and prove my worth to the team."
Shaw will now be hoping for some game time as England prepare to face Spain in the UEFA Nations League on Saturday.
