David De Gea: Spain boss Fernando Hierro speaks out on error and Cristiano Ronaldo

SPAIN boss Fernando Hierro refused to blame David De Gea for their draw with Portugal and hailed his side’s fighting spirit after a troubled week.
Fernando Hierro’s Spain drew 3-3 with Portugal at the World Cup

Spain sacked Julen Lopetegui just days before their World Cup Group B opener against Iberian rivals Portugal and drafted in Hierro to take temporary charge at the tournament.

A thrilling 90 minutes ensued in Hierro’s first match as the two sides drew 3-3 in Sochi.

Manchester United star De Gea was at fault for Portugal’s second and Cristiano Ronaldo superb late free-kick secured them a point in a stunning game.

On De Gea, Hierro said: "He's one of us, we do not leave anyone behind."

He added: “We have put ourselves two times ahead and what Cristiano has done is to be expected.

"We have taken an important step, we have overcome adversity, the team has fought.

“We have not stopped believing and that is the important thing with all the circumstances.”

Ronaldo gave Portugal an early lead from the penalty spot before Diego Costa levelled with a fine solo effort.

Ronaldo then put the Euro 2016 champions back ahead thanks to De Gea’s error but Costa equalised yet again.

Nacho, who gave away the penalty, then fired a thunderbolt to put Spain in front for the first time.
