Working with Maurizio Sarri would be a “homecoming”, says Gianfranco Zola’s agent

The agent of Gianfranco Zola has revealed his client is keen on the idea of working with Maurizio Sarri at Chelsea.

Sarri, who was recently replaced as Napoli boss by Carlo Ancelotti, has been tipped to take over as Chelsea’s new manager this summer despite the fact Antonio Conte remains in charge.

According to the London Evening Standard, Sarri agreed personal terms with Chelsea last month but the Londoners are yet to agree a compensation fee with Napoli.

The same report claims Chelsea are considering appointing Zola as part of Sarri’s coaching staff.
And Zola’s agent, Fulvio Marrucco, has suggested the former Blues forward would be willing to work under Sarri at Stamford Bridge.

“Zola is very happy with the rumours,” Marrucco told CalcioNapoli24. “His idols as coaches are Guardiola and Sarri. Working with Maurizio would be a fantastic thing.

“For him it would also be a homecoming. Chelsea is another home for Zola.

“He has remained in the hearts of all the [Chelsea] fans. No one has ever taken the no.25 jersey. When he left Chelsea, 40,000 people arrived to greet him.

“We still have to wait a few days. I have no scheduled meetings.”

Zola made a total of 331 appearances for Chelsea between 1996 and 2003, scoring 80 goals and winning two FA Cups during his time at the club.

Since retiring from playing in 2005, Zola has ventured into management, coaching West Ham United, Italy’s Under-16s, Watford, Cagliari, Al-Arabi and Birmingham City.

The Italian has been out of work since leaving Birmingham in April 2017 after winning just two of his 24 games in charge of the Midlands club.
