The deal to take Fekir from Lyon to Liverpool looked all but certain, with the two clubs agreeing a fee, the player agreeing terms, having a medical, and even conducting his ‘first interview’ with the official Liverpool website, who were ready to announce the transfer.
However, the Premier League giants unexpectedly pulled out of the deal, reportedly due to issues brought to light in the medical regarding a long-standing knee injury.
The 25-year-old then jetted off to the World Cup, where he made six appearances from the bench for the eventual winners France, including one in the final, with his apparent knee injury showing no sign of re-occurring.
Despite that, Liverpool did not renew their interest, and Fekir stayed at the Ligue 1 club.
“Yes, the failed Liverpool move has been totally digested,” he told ESPN.
“These things can happen. That is how it is. You have to move on — it is ancient history.”
He went on to say that he was unsure as to the exact reason to why the deal collapsed:
“I heard a few things,” he added. “The real reason, though, only they [Liverpool] know.”
