Sir Alex Ferguson wanted Man City star to replace Paul Scholes - Meulensteen

Former Red Devils assistant manager Rene Meulensteen has revealed the German was a top target for Fergie a few years ago at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman was speaking on the current squad and what differences there would be between the players Jose Mourinho now has at his disposal.

And as well as Gundogan, Marco Reus is said to be someone Fergie was interested in.
Meulensteen told the Evening Standard: “If Fergie had carried on then we would have had the same squad.
“We would have added some more quality, probably some more energy.
“We were looking at Gundogan from Dortmund and Reus at that time.

“We were looking at Gundogan - someone similar (to Scholes), who could keep ticking the ball over, thinks quick and has tempo.”

Manchester United have struggled so far this season, losing two of their opening two Premier League matches.

The Red Devils were shocked by Brighton before being thumped by Tottenham 3-0 at Old Trafford.
United will hope to get back to winning ways on Saturday when they take on Watford at 5.30pm in the top flight.

Gundogan went on to become the first signing for Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.
The German has yet to establish himself in the Spaniard’s line-up but has played regularly for the champions since his switch.
Gundogan will hope to feature for City on Saturday against Fulham at the Etihad.
Instead of going for Gundogan, United brought in Marouane Fellaini when David Moyes took charge.
The Scot also targeted Cesc Fabregas and Thiago Alcantara but ultimately was unable to seal a deal for either of them.
