No matter your thoughts on who is to blame, his prediction couldn’t have been more accurate, with the Red Devils currently enduring their worst start to a campaign in 29 years and without a win in four games in all competitions.
With Newcastle United the visitors to Old Trafford today, the under-fire manager has said that while his team can do better, he reminded the press of his summer prediction:
“This team can do much better than what it is doing and the team will do much better than what it is doing,” he said in his pre-match press conference.
”But, if you want me to repeat I will. Last season was a fantastic season for us and if you want something more, in pre-season I also told you that this season would be very difficult.
“I think we have enough potential to be doing better than what we are doing in the Premier League. We are better than this and because of that our situation is going to improve, I have no doubts about that.”
Mourinho did say that his side has the quality to beat Newcastle this afternoon, although insisted he isn’t taking it for granted that his wide will pick up all three points, despite the Magpies having yet to have won a game this season.
“We can win against Newcastle, but it’s a difficult match. We can win, we want to win,” he added.
“We have possibilities to win the match, but I refuse to say we have three points in the pocket.
I have to respect an opponent, I have to respect a manager with a history of trophies and know-how.
“That’s the way I was brought up in life and in football – to respect.”
