Manchester United boss Mourinho is under pressure after a run of poor results and a public bust-up with Paul Pogba.
But Neville thinks the Portuguese can look at the time Ferguson struggled at Old Trafford and learn from the way he would turn things round.
He also feels Mourinho still has his best days ahead of him and isn’t behind the likes of Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola and Mauricio Pochettino.
“Jose is a serial winner - he's always won wherever he's been - and I don't buy into this theory that Jose Mourinho's finished, that he's a manager of yesterday, that Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola, Mauricio Pochettino are today's managers.
“I heard that from 2003 to 2006 about Sir Alex Ferguson when Arsene Wenger, Rafa Benitez and Jose Mourinho first came to England and Sir Alex Ferguson didn't win the title for three years.
“There were suggestions in that period, ‘Oh is this the end of Sir Alex?’
“He needs some time - not to build a new team - but he needs time to work this out.”
United picked up a crucial win against Newcastle at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Goals from Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez gave the Red Devils a 3-2 victory after being 2-0 behind to the Magpies.
Next up for Mourinho is a trip to former side Chelsea on Saturday, October 20.
After that Cristiano Ronaldo returns to Old Trafford as United take on Juventus in the Champions League.
