Jose Mourinho drops big hint on possible Manchester United signing Alderweireld

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has dropped a massive hint on the possible arrival of Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld.

It is no secret the powerful Belgian international is Mourinho’s top transfer target and the one player who would be the ideal partner for young Eric Bailly, who needs an experienced leader next to him in the back-line.

Reports even claimed United held talks with Spurs towards the end of last season, but baulked at Tottenham’s £75million valuation of the Belgium defender.

That has led to speculation United have given up the chase for Alderweireld, as they know that they can sign the Belgian for just £25 million next season due to a clause in his contract.

And now Mourinho has indicated which defenders will be starting the season with United next season, he said on the Metro website: ‘Valencia, Smalling, Bailly and Shaw, they are probably the ones to start the season.’

United have the money and budget to acquire any player in world football, but have so far been reluctant to splash the cash and land one or two new superstar signings.

But unless Mourinho sees something in his back-line from last season, the Red Devils may once again struggle to catch and then overtake local rivals Manchester City for the Premier League title.
