Regardless of what happens the rest of the way, though, you can be sure Sarri will face some tough decisions on the transfer market next summer. Influential midfielder Cesc Fabregas is currently in the final year of his contract at Stamford Bridge, and we are already hearing rumors that he could be on the move once the season comes to a close. Former Serie A giants AC Milan are reportedly among the teams interested in securing his signature once his contract expires next summer.
While the Blues have gotten off to a hot start, most oddsmakers still believe the Premier League title is still either Manchester City’s or Liverpool’s to lose. Most reputable sites have Chelsea listed at somewhere around +900 to lift the Premier League trophy this season. If you’re looking for a place to bet, you can check out BettingSite.org. Whether Fabregas plays much of a role in the club’s pursuit of another title remains to be seen.
Once the calendar flips to January, Fabregas will be free to discuss a potential deal with other clubs. Because he will be out of a contract, Fabregas will be able to move without a transfer fee. According to the Express, both AC and Inter Milan are among those that have already been made aware of the player’s contract status. Both are currently weighing whether to make him an offer to come to Italy ahead of next season.
As of now, it sounds as though AC Milan are the slight favorites. The prevailing thought is that the club could even seek to secure a deal for the Spanish international’s services once the next transfer window opens in January.
Milan have long been interested in acquiring Real Madrid’s Luka Modric. The Croatian captain is in a bit of a contract limbo of his own with Los Blancos, and it was thought that the 32-year-old could ultimately be tempted by a change of scenery. However, once Milan failed to lure Modric they reportedly turned their attention to Fabregas. Chelsea were unwilling to sell the player this past summer, but that isn’t expected to keep Milan from trying again in the next window.
Fabregas believed he would play a key role at Stamford Bridge under Sarri. However, he was injured late in the preseason, and he has found it difficult to crack Sarri’s side ever since. Fabregas has not been among Sarri’s preferred starting options in the midfield. If that continues, he could start to look for a new home.
Fabregas’ lone appearance to this point under Sarri came during the team’s Community Shield loss to Manchester City. Newcomers Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic have joined N’Golo Kante as the manager’s preferred starting midfield trio. Chelsea also have Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek waiting in the wings, which means Fabregas could be on the outside looking in for much of the campaign.
Milan already secured a loan deal for Chelsea midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko, who came to Stamford Bridge ahead of last season after a successful title-winning season with Monaco. His presence reportedly has not stopped Milan from maintaining their interest in adding Fabregas at some point.
It is currently unknown whether Chelsea have interest in signing Fabregas to a new deal, but considering he isn’t in Sarri’s immediate plans, it would seem as though his departure is the most likely outcome.
Fabregas, 31, has scored 15 goals in 132 appearances for Chelsea since returning to England in 2014. He played a crucial role in the team’s two recent league titles under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte. Prior to joining Chelsea, Fabregas played 8 seasons for London rivals Arsenal as well as a 3-year stint in Spain with Barcelona.
