One winner and loser as Gini Wijnaldum solidifies place in Liverpool side

The Dutch international was linked with a move away from Anfield this summer but has started the 2018/19 Premier League campaign in terrific form in Jurgen Klopp’s new look Liverpool setup.

Wijnaldum has been an understated key figure in Klopp’s midfield, putting in solid performances in his new number 6 role in the side, keeping new summer signing Fabinho on the sidelines.

The 27-year-old’s last game against Brighton was the stand out display of his season so far, where he completed all but one of his 76 passes in the game in a supremely disciplined performance.

Winner – Liverpool’s midfield options
Wijnaldum’s tremendous start to the campaign has come as a surprise to everyone, and it’s something Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp can reap the rewards of in their busy season schedule.

The Dutchman has been a revelation in his new no.6 role in the side and his early season antics have proved all the naysayers wrong and kept the talented Fabinho out of the team.

It remains to be seen how Klopp will utilise Wijnaldum in his new position. However, it gives the Liverpool boss another dimension and option in his already stacked midfield.

Loser – Fabinho
The Reds signed the highly rated Brazilian midfielder for £43.7 million this summer from Monaco. However, he has yet to feature in any of their opening fixtures.

Fabinho was brought into the Anfield ranks to be the anchor in Jurgen Klopp’s new look Liverpool side, but after Wijnaldum’s tremendous start to the campaign, it may be hard for the Brazilian to earn a place in the starting XI.

The 23-year-old will have to settle into life on the sidelines if the Dutchman continues his impressive form in the no.6 role.
