Chelsea made a late flurry of transfers before the summer window shut in the Premier League, and one Chelsea legend is beyond impressed with Maurizio Sarri’s buys
The Blues had a rather weird summer and despite signing new manager
Maurizio Sarri very late in the transfer window, the former Napoli boss
did a decent enough job bringing in new players. The likes of Kepa
Arrizabalaga, Jorginho, Robert Green and Mateo Kovacic all joined
Chelsea while Thibaut Courtois and Michy Batushayi were the only major
departures.
However, despite that many believe that the signing of the season was Jorginho with Premier League expert Paul Merson putting his stamp of authority on the 50 million transfer fee. The Blues beat out the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City and Manchester United to the Napoli man’s signature who arrived alongside his former manager at Chelsea.
The 25-year-old had a rather sensational stint at the San Paolo stadium, becoming Sarri’s right-hand man in midfield, running the game for Napoli at times. He was a crucial part of the way the 59-year-old liked things to be at Napoli and hopes that the Italian international can do the same here at Chelsea. But Chelsea legend Dennis Wise belives that Jorginho has the potential to do a lot more at Stamford Bridge.
This is not, as some appear to have assumed, a ranking of Chelsea's best players. Jorginho is above Kante & Hazard because it's already clear he's the most important player to what Sarri is trying to do (whether it works or not). The whole system is built around him #cfc— Liam Twomey (@liam_twomey) August 16, 2018
I think by bringing in Jorginho, you bring in someone who knows Sarri very well and how he plays and what he wants to do. When you have someone right in the middle of that midfield who understands how the manager plays and dictates that to everyone, I think it is really helpful and he has so much quality as well.
I think he has given the ball away once over the whole pre-season. I am actually looking forward to seeing him progress over the course of this season.”
Author’s take:
While Jorginho should automatically get a place in the Chelsea line-up, he will have to fight the likes of Cesc Fabregas and even Ruben Loftus-Cheek, for his place. However, there is no doubt the talent and the class that Chelsea has brought in. But even then, the 26 year old needs to prove himself all over again in England.
