Chelsea to target Spaniard, player has €80M release clause

Chelsea have reportedly identified Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga as our preferred replacement for Thibaut Courtois.

Courtois’ future as a Chelsea player has been in serious doubt for some time now. He has less than a year to run on his contract, and has hinted that he wants to return to Madrid to reunite with his young children.

We sympathised with him. It wouldn’t be fair to keep him away from his kids any longer against his will, but the way he has conducted himself in recent days is a disgrace.

Courtois has failed to report for training in order to force through a move to Real Madrid. He may well get his own way, but at the expense of his legacy among Chelsea fans. He’ll now be remembered for all the wrong reasons.

Losing him is no disaster if he is replaced adequately. According to AS, Arrizabalaga is the target, with Chelsea prepared to meet his €80M release clause in order to get the deal over the line.

The likelihood is that the club are exploring several options ahead of Courtois’ proposed departure. It really is unclear at this stage who we will get in the door to replace the Belgian.
