The Germany international has emerged as a surprise target for Mourinho, who is desperate to find a centre-half signing this week.
Mourinho, after their friendly defeat to Bayern on Sunday, was asked about his interest in Boateng.
The Portuguese replied: "Boateng? My general manager knows what I want, I think he is doing his best for me.
"I still have a few days to wait."
