Jose Mourinho has had a difficult pre-season and it did not get any better when the Red Devils were beaten 1-0 by the German champions at the Allianz Arena yesterday.
The 55-year-old has been critical of his players in recent weeks, particularly Anthony Martial.
But his comments after the last pre-season match had a very different tone as he reflected on his young players’ performances.
Speaking after the match, Mourinho said: “I was looking at Axel [Tuanzebe] at centre-back on the left, Demetri [Mitchell] at left wing-back, [James] Garner in the midfield on the left and [Tahith] Chong.
“At the same time there was [Robert] Lewandowski on Axel, [Arjen] Robben on Mitchell, [Leon] Goretzka on Garner and [Niklas] Sule on Chong.
“That’s fantastic. That’s absolutely fantastic.”
But United fans were concerned that the manager was alluding to something else in his interview.
“Or he’s just pointing out that we are so much worse,” one supporter wrote.
Another added: “It’s academy players vs some legendary pro football players.
“Jose is sarcastic with his comments. There is no promise for the young lads.”
And a third made a big prediction for the coming season.
“Too many negatives,” they said.
“Damage control for his reputation. Will be gone by Christmas. Never been a long term manager.”
There may be good news soon for Old Trafford though as transfer target Ivan Perisic dropped a huge hint about his future.
While former United chief executive Peter Kenyon has called on Mourinho to put his conflict with Ed Woodward aside
