Man Utd confident in completing deal for new centre-back – not Alex Sandro

United have been expected to strengthen the centre back and have been linked to several defenders from Jerome Boateng to Skriniar to Toby Aldeireweld without any success.

However, close sources claim that United are confident of securing top target Alderweireld from Tottenham this summer.

Mourinho had identified Alderweireld as a key target for the centre back position last season and United have been monitoring the player’s situation all summer.

United had begun negotiation for the defender since May, however, Tottenham have proven to be tough negotiators demanding a fee of £75million for the 29-year-old centre back. However despite the breakdown in negotiations, United are still hopeful of completing the transfer before the pre-season tour of Europe.

Alderweireld has developed into one of the consistent performers in the EPL since his move from Atletico Madrid in 2015.
The arrival of Davinson Sanchez coupled with injuries and a public spite with Coach Mauricio Pochettino meant that he made only 11 Premier League appearances for the North London club.

Despite the somewhat dearth of playing time for club, he was impressive for Belgium where he formed the bedrock of the team that finished 3rd at the world cup held in Russia.

Alderweireld capture would go a long way in calming the nerves of supporters ahead of the new season, injuries to Eric Baily and the indifferent forms of Jones, Smalling and Lindelof means United must get a centre-back this summer.
