He has not been a regular starter in the previous season, being displaced in the line-up by young German defender Antonio Rudiger when Antonio Conte was still in charge.
Now there is a belief that his role will be further reduced in the squad with new manager Maurizio Sarri's system demanding the defenders to play high up the pitch and being comfortable in possession and taking the ball out from the back. These are traits which have never been associated with Cahill and reports have emerged that he is now seriously pondering bringing an end to his tenure at the Bridge.
The Daily Star have now reported that Manchester United have now emerged as favourites to sign the veteran English defender as Jose Mourinho looks to re-ignite his successful partnership with Cahill which he had at Chelsea.
Mourinho believes that Cahill will be the perfect man to be the leader of the Manchester United defense which has youngsters like Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof in it.
Cahill would also be considerably cheaper than other targets like Toby Alderweireld, who would end up costing a fortune.
Now, it remains to be seen whether United follow up on their interest and bring the Chelsea captain to Old Trafford.
